The facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes inv
ades and multiplies in many mammalian cell types. During the interaction wi
th its host cells it strongly interferes with and modulates host cell funct
ions. In the present review we summarize the current knowledge on the modul
ation of signal transduction pathways by secreted listerial products prior
to bacterium-cell contact, during uptake, or while L. monocytogenes resides
in the different intracellular compartments, (C) 1999 Academic Press.
