Ceramics of Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O-3-BaSnO3 (BSMT) are synthesized by a two-stage
calcination method. Microstructures are analyzed, using X-ray diffractometr
y, transmission elect:ron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning elec
tron microscopy. The addition of BaSnO3 reduces the cation ordering of Ba(M
g1/3Ta2/3)O-3 and its sinterability. Variations in ordered structure with B
aSnO3 content are revealed by the reduction in intensity of the superlattic
e reflections, the domain size, the c/a ratio, and the shifting and broaden
ing in Raman lines. The relations between microstructure and quality factor
s of BSMT are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd and Techna S.r.l. Al
