An e-mail survey and an investigation were made of academic librarians' per
sonal Web pages in order to understand what role they play in the organizat
ion of the Internet. Subjects were selected from two Internet lists of libr
arian's Web pages. Results showed that most Web sites were produced volunta
rily and serve multiple purposes. An independent t-test determined that tho
se librarians who were provided with guidelines produced higher-quality Web
pages. Guideline effectiveness and suggestions for further research are di
scussed.
