Organometallic palladium(II) complexes obtained by cyclometallation reactio
ns of azobenzene ligands or Schiff bases are of considerable interest in th
e context of practical applications such as lumunescent or liquid-crystalli
ne materials. The shape and the dimensions of the molecules can play an imp
ortant role in the physical properties ai these new molecular materials. Va
rious dinuclear cyclopalladated azobenzene complexes structurally character
ised are reviewed with the intention to provide insights into the design of
new dimeric metallomesogens with a suitable molecular shape.
