Information and participation within environmental management

This paper reviews the key components of processes for informed and partici patory environmental management and planning in urban areas. These include techniques more commonly associated with external technical expertise such as environmental impact assessments, capacity studies and environmental aud its and initiatives that place more emphasis on the role of the community i n understanding the environment and helping develop appropriate responses. The paper also discusses how these fit within broader debates on "good gove rnance".
