Abstract
The dimanganese(II) complex of an accordion-like binucleating tetrapyrrolic macrocycle, 1, is a functional model for manganese catalases. The rate of O-2 evolution accelerates upon the addition of nitrogenous bases, the rate being correlated with the pK(a) of the base. The crystal structure has feat ures similar to those of a number of binuclear metalloproteins.
