This paper discusses the main chemical ripeners used and their effects on t
he crop in the sugarcane agro-industries associated with Booker Tate Ltd. W
hilst response to treatment varied from country to country there were incre
ases in juice quality and sugar yield in all locations. Nevertheless, it is
emphasised that the use of such ripeners may not be practicable and need n
ot be universally profitable. Therefore any proposed application requires c
areful research before an industry adopts the practice as a method for incr
easing sugar yields commercially.
