In MgNi with an amorphous phase, a miscibility-gap (plateau) pressure of ab
out 3X10(-4) MPa at room temperature was clearly detected by electrochemica
l p-c isotherm measurements. The total radial distribution functions for X-
ray and neutron diffraction indicated that deuterium in MgNi occupies an in
terstitial tetrahedral site composed of nearly 2Mg2Ni. Structural and hydri
ding properties of elemental substitution systems, Mg(Ni1-xTx) (T=Co and Cu
) and (Mg1-xAlx)Ni with x=0-0.5, were also investigated experimentally. (C)
