The choices of the components of the electrolyte phase for advanced batteri
es (lithium and lithium ion batteries) are very sensitive to the electrodes
which are used. There are also a number of other requirements for the elec
trolyte phase, which depend on the cell design and the materials chosen for
the battery. The difficulty of choice is compounded when the cell is a rec
hargeable one. This paper looks at each of these requirements and the degre
e to which they are met for lithium and Lithium ion batteries. The discussi
on is broken into sections on anode or negative electrode stability require
ments, cathode or positive electrode stability requirements, conductivity n
eeds, viscosity and wetting requirements. The effects of these properties a
nd interactions on the performance of batteries are also discussed. (C) 199
