The effect of thermal oxidation on the anodic characteristics of graphite w
as investigated. This treatment led to a large increase in irreversible cap
acity which was attributed to the expansion of pores in the graphite. Varia
tions in the electrolyte were found to significantly affect the magnitude o
f this increase. A comparison of various electrolytes was used to study the
irreversible reduction reactions which take place at the anode during the
first cycle of a lithium-ion cell. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All right
