The hydration of dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) micelles w
as determined by viscosity measurements, giving 39.2 +/- 7.0 water mol
ecules per micellized dodecyltrimethylammonium ion. This result is low
er than the hydration of DTAB micelles, which is about 65. This differ
ence may be due to the effect of the electrorestrictive structure-maki
ng hydroxide ion on the hydration of the alkyltrimethylammonium head g
roup, in comparison with the less hydrated structure-breaking bromide
ion.
