This study deals with the hydrothermal synthesis of highly ordered MCM-41 a
nd B-MCM-41. Four techniques for the generation of MCM-41 were compared: th
ermal treatment in polypropylene vessels, in static autoclaves, in a stirre
d autoclave in ovens, and in microwave reactors heated with microwave radia
tion. The formation process of MCM-41 and the condensation of the framework
were monitored by X-ray diffraction. The high periodicity of the materials
was detected with X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron micro
scopy. Highly ordered samples showing reflections up to sixth order in the
selected area electron diffraction were produced. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science
