The detailed geological mapping in the area between Vathia and Porto Kagio
in the Mani peninsula revealed a post-nappe tectonism due to gravity slidin
g. As a result, the Mani marbles (Plattenkalk-series?) and their elastic se
diments (metaflysch?) are found in reverse stratigraphic order (overturned
position), appearing in places to overthrust the phyllite-quartzite nappe.
Thus, the metaclastic sediments (phyllite-quartzites), that in other locati
ons are referred to as the basement of Plattenkalk, may not be their origin
al sedimentation substratum, and their occurrence may be the result of simi
lar post-nappe tectonism.
