This article describes the development of ATM cross-connect equipment (Mode
l B) and a dedicated operation support system (Model B NE-OSS). Model B rea
lizes a virtual path based cross-connect and reduces transmission line netw
ork cost. It features 20 Gbit/s cross-connect capacity and expandable cross
-connect architecture, It also offers the virtual path protection switching
function and priority control for VPs, at lower cost and lower power consu
mption than existing products. To facilitate the globalization of Model B N
E-OSS, its functions are distributed in compliance with TMN architecture. I
n addition, the Q3 interface is used between Model B NE-OSS and Network OSS
(ANIMA: ATM Network Integration Manager). Note that this Q3 interface is a
lso used between Model B NE-OSS and its HMI in order to ease system develop
ment. A proprietary interface is placed between Model B NE and NE-OSS that
allows a single NE-OSS to manage various types of Model B NEs.
