Abstract
Design and synthesis of new electro-optic polymers are presented. These pol ymers have specific refractive index as low as the index of glass ion-excha nge waveguides. With these materials, a novel hybrid structure can be desig ned for optical modulation in passive waveguide. The low index is obtained by copolymerization of an electro-optic monomer and two fluorinated comonom ers. The result is a copolymer with an index close to 1.50, high electro-op tic coefficient and good technical properties. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B. V. All rights reserved.
