Theoretical and experimental studies of the mechanism of optical limitation
of laser radiation by fullerene-containing media are reported. It is shown
that the optical limitation is determined by saturable absorption from an
excited vibronic state and strong photoinduced coherent scattering. The fea
sibility of the development of a multistage limiter based on a fullerene-co
ntaining medium (for example, C-60-toluene) with a dynamic range of 10(7) (
from 10 to 10(-6) J/cm(2)) is justified.
