In recent years, the high quality observational data returned by space base
d observatories, such as Hubble, has highlighted the need for highly accura
te atomic data. There is no doubt that this situation will be further empha
sised by the launch of future space missions such as FUSE.
Atomic f-values are needed to analyse the observed data. Therefore, the acc
uracy of the results of this analysis relies heavily on the accuracy of bot
h the atomic and the observed data. In the majority of cases, it has been t
he inaccuracy of the atomic f-values which has hampered analysis.
Systematic calculations have been performed for a number of transitions in
neutral sulphur using the Superposition of Configurations (SOC) approach wi
th the code CIV3 [A. Hibbert, Comput. Phys. Commun. 9, 141 (1975)]. Prelimi
nary f-values for both allowed and semi-forbidden intersystem lines are pre
sented.
