g factors of the 2(1)(+) and 4(1)(+) states in Zr-92,Zr-94 have been measur
ed via Coulomb excitation of isotopically pure Zr-92,Zr-94 beams in inverse
kinematics in combination with the transient field technique. The high pre
cision results, g(Zr-92; 2(1)(+)) = -0.180(10) and g(Zr-94; 2(1)(+)) = -0.3
29(15) as well as the new data on the 4(1)(+) state, g(Zr-92; 4(1)(+)) = -0
.50(11), provide, for the first time, clear evidence of the dominant role o
f d(5/2) neutrons in the wave functions of these nuclei just above the N =
50 shell closure. Moreover, the data imply increased purity of the d(5/2) n
eutron component in the wave function with increasing spin. (C) 1999 Publis
