Pulmonary embolus is a significant aspect of thromboembolic venous disease
which globally is the third most important cardiovascular disorder. There a
re several methods of primary prevention to decrease morbidity and mortalit
y related to this disease. This article consists of a review of the most cu
rrent methods of prophylaxis followed by practical recommendations for surg
ical, medical and obstetric patients.
