The paper highlights the importance of reliability of finite element soluti
ons in the context of acceptance of results by designers. The developments
made in this direction by introducing the concept of a posteriori error est
imation and adaptive mesh refinement for finite element analysis of structu
res are presented. The paper discusses the scientific basis and details of
formulations proposed by researchers along with an illustrative example. Th
e contributions made by SERC, Madras in this area of research are also ment
ioned. Future directions of research are also highlighted.
