This article provides an introduction to, and overview of the proceedings o
f a workshop organised by the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Inte
grated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), entitled 'The Internet in South Asia:
Opportunities and Realities', that took place in Dhaka in April 1999. The
workshop was paid particular attention to how Internet usage in south Asia
can be promoted in ways that benefit the lives of the poor.
