G. Deplano et al., Design and experimentation of a Geographic Information System applied to an environmental risk area in the Iglesiente, ADV ECOL SC, 2, 1999, pp. 167-172
The area studied, in southwestern Sardinia (Italy) has been subjected to in
tensive mining activity over years which left numerous excavations both und
erground and on the surface, dumps and settling basins for the disposal of
mineral waste. Today, such eyesores, characterizing the landscape, cause di
rect and indirect risks for people, animals and biotic environment. The app
lication of a GIS has enabled the connection and the analysis of the ecosys
tem, the mining landscape and building infrastructure, highlighting potenti
al risks for the natural resources and population.
