The essential oils of fresh leaves, flowers and fruits of Vitex agus-castus
L., growing in north Brazil, were obtained by hydrodistillation and their
volatile constituents were identified by GC-MS. The most abundant constitue
nts found were 1,8-cineole, (E)-beta-farnesene, sabinene, alpha-pinene, alp
ha-terpenyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene and bicyclogermacrene. Their compos
itions were compared with oils from Europe and Nigeria. 1,8-Cineole was an
important component in all the samples analysed. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wi
