Supraspecific division of the genus Juncus (Juncaceae)

A new classification of the genus Juncus (Juncaceae) is presented. The genu s is divided into two subgenera, characterized by the presence/absence of b racteoles and the structure of inflorescence. Lower rank subdivisions, sect ions, generally correspond to the traditionally recognized subgenera introd uced by Buchenau. A new name is introduced for what has been called subg. ( sect.) Ensifolii, Juncus sect. Iridifolii. A checklist of supraspecific nam es in Juncus, with typification and references to the sectional names accep ted, is presented in the Appendix.
