A method for maintaining viable cultures of ectomycorrhizal Hebeloma strain
s in cold liquid culture medium is described. Isolates of Hebeloma spp., co
llected over a wide geographic range, were stored at 2 degrees C for a peri
od of three years. All cultures survived this storage period, a greater tim
e period and success rate than has previously been reported for the long te
rm storage of ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes. The method may prove useful f
or long-term storage of other basidiomycete genera.
