The structures and magnetic properties of the unique series of isostru
ctural metal bischelates with sterically hindered deprotonated spin-la
beled enamineketones M(((X))L-n)(2) and M(((X))L-n)(2)(CH3OH)(2), wher
e M = Ni, Co and Cu, containing different substituents X (CH3, H, Cl o
i Br) in the gamma-position of the metal-chelate core, were investigat
ed. Weak ferromagnetism is inherent in solid M(((X))L-1) (CH3OH)(2) at
low temperatures (5-7 K). It has I,een shown that changing the gamma-
substituent practically does not affect the magnetic properties of the
solid and has ii considerable effect on the accepting ability of the
metal ion and, hence, on the chemical behavior of the compound. The re
sults are important in designing molecule-based magnetic materials: si
nce the above change strengthens the accepting ability of the metal io
n, which is favorable for the favorable for the formation of 2-D struc
tures.
