Moving average residual self-potential anomalies obtained from self-potenti
al data using filters of successive window lengths can be used to determine
the shape (shape factor) and depth of a buried structure. For a fixed wind
ow length, the depth is determined for each shape factor using a simple for
mula. The computed depths are plotted against the shape factors representin
g a continuous window curve. The solution for the shape and depth of the bu
ried structure is read at the common intersection of the window curves. The
validity of the method is tested on two synthetic examples and a field exa
mple from Turkey.
