Abstract
Shear deformation properties of alpha-silicon nitride single crystal are in vestigated by molecular dynamics. Three cases of shearing directions are an alyzed, two of which were reported to be slip system an the basis of experi mental observations. The simulation results show that for the experimentall y predicted slip system, shear strength is low and localized band-like shea r deformation appears. Disordered atomic structure produced by shear deform ation is regarded to be amorphous.
