An experimental study of a new broadband design of a slot-loaded trapezoid
microstrip antenna is presented. The two radiating edges of the trapezoid m
icrostrip, patch have a length ratio of 2.0, and a pair of narrow slots of
unequal lengths are loaded close to the nonradiating edges of the trapezoid
patch. The proposed design can cause a group of three adjacent resonant mo
des excited in the vicinity of the fundamental resonant mode of the unslott
ed trapezoid microstrip antenna. This behavior leads to significant enhance
ment in the antenna's impedance bandwidth. Results show that the proposed n
ew antenna can have an impedance bandwidth greater than three times that of
rectangular or circular microstrip antennas. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, I
