Abstract
It is discovered that the major contribution to the distortions of the tetr ahedra in the alpha-quartz at high pressure is their twisting. It is shown that just these twisting vibrational,modes lead to instability resulting in amorphization of the structure. [S0163-1829(99)00745-6].
