Mm. Block et al., Predicting proton-air cross sections at root s similar to 30 TeV using accelerator and cosmic ray data, PHYS REV L, 83(24), 1999, pp. 4926-4928
We use the high-energy predictions of a QCD-inspired parametrization of all
accelerator data on forward proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering
amplitudes, along with Glauber theory, to predict proton-air cross section
s at energies near root s approximate to 30 TeV. The parametrization of the
proton-proton cross section incorporates analyticity and unitarity and dem
ands that the asymptotic proton is a black disk of soft partons. By compari
ng with the p-air cosmic ray measurements, our analysis results in a constr
aint on the inclusive particle production cross section.
