The redistribution of Chernobyl Cs-137 within a small drainage basin was st
udied in the Lokna river basin, Tula region, Central Russia. Sheet erosion
on the cultivated part of basin is the main reason for Cs-137 horizontal mi
gration. However there is no statistically significant Cs-137 redistributio
n within cultivated field because of relatively low erosion rates. The vall
ey bottom is the main sink of Cs-137, where 73-84% eroded soil is stored. T
he resulting Cs-137, level in the valley bottom is 1.5-2 times that of the
initial Cs-137 fallout. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
