The effect of quantum confinement upon the pressure induced direct to indir
ect interband transition in InP nanocrystals is investigated. We examine th
e behavior of the transition as a function of nanocrystal size. It is compu
ted that smaller nanocrystals require less pressure to become indirect than
larger nanocrystals. Our results suggest that the properties of the transi
tion may be sensitive to nanocrystal stoichiometry. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scien
