The approach of "partner drugs" in the treatment of bacterial meningitis is
described in light of the unique pathophysiology of infection of the centr
al nervous system. The current and controversial therapies of equine protoz
oal myeloencephalitis are discussed. Approaches to controlling inflammation
in the central nervous system are discussed, including steroidal and nonst
eroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and vitamin E. C
ontrol of seizures is described with the use of phenobarbital and diazepam.
Current topics in behavioral pharmacology in horses are discussed, in view
of the potential for unethical use in performance horses.
