Dietary fibres can modify the intestinal structure in dogs and other a
nimal species. The main changes concern not only the morphology of the
gastrointestinal tract but also the ultrastructures. Furthermore, sol
uble and partly-soluble fibres are fermented in the large bowel; the f
ermentation products have different metabolic effects. The physical an
d chemical properties of fibres can be used for the dietary therapy of
some intestinal pathologies.
