Abstract
Accurate estimates of volume of developing muskmelon ovaries were obta ined from the length and diameter. The volume of ovaries ranging from 0.5 to 17 cm in diameter and 1 to 19 cm in length measured by water di splacement was compared with volume calculated from a formula develope d previously for mature melon fruits of various types. A small but sig nificant adjustment was incorporated into the formula to account for t he smaller dimension range of the fruits and the specificity of the ea stern-type cultivar that we used. This work improved the applicability of the original formula, and allowed for rapid, nondestructive, and a ccurate estimation of muskmelon ovary volumes important for growth stu dies.
