R. Dupkala, Reflections of European philosophy in the philosophy taught at the Evangelical College in Presov in the 17th century, FILOZOFIA, 54(7), 1999, pp. 428-441
The contribution examines the reflections of European philosophy at Presov
Evangelical college in the 17th century. In the author's view there were th
ree dominant philosophical conceptions in the 17th century: Bayer's baconis
m, Caban's atomism and Ladiver's evangelical aristotelism. The different wa
ys of assimilating the European philosophy (especially that of Aristotle, B
acon, Descartes and Gassendi) provoked continual tension and conflicts. A s
pecial attention is paid to the conflict between Ladiver and Caban, concern
ing the existence of atoms, to Bayer's reception of Bacon's teaching on the
ideals and to the approaches of all the above mentioned professors at Pres
ov Evangelical college to logic or to Aristotle's metaphysics. The works by
J. Bayer, I. Caban and E. Ladiver are characterized by the author as a dom
inant component of the most important traditions or philosophical thinking
in Slovakia.
