A numerical analysis is made of different conditions of radiation heat tran
sfer from a hot spherical particle via vapor shell to the surrounding liqui
d. In the case of the vapor shell thickness comparable with the heat radiat
ion wavelength, wave effects are included which result in a considerable in
crease of the heat Aux. For a great thickness of the shell, the problem is
solved using the Mie theory for the particle emissivity, Fresnel formulas f
or refraction and reflection of radiation on the liquid surface, and the eq
uation of radiation transfer for the calculation of radial distribution of
the pourer of absorbed radiation. Recommendations are given for approximate
inclusion of radiation heat transfer in the calculations of interaction be
tween molten core particles and water as applied to studies into possible v
apor explosion under conditions of a severe accident in a nuclear reactor.
