This article reviews the principles of learning and how they can be em
ployed in the scientific validation of animal behavior therapy. The na
ture of learned behavior is reviewed at a practical level. General pro
grams for increasing and decreasing a behavior are described, along wi
th guidelines for considering and assessing their efficacy in any give
n situation.
