Most of the future advances in therapy with behavioral medicine probab
ly will be pharmacologic. Newer developments in tricyclic antidepressa
nts, specific and nonspecific anxiolytics, narcotic agonist-antagonist
s, and benzodiazepines will have great relevance for veterinary medici
ne. As the field of behavioral medicine expands, its paradigm hopefull
y will enlarge to include combination therapy and the implementation o
f neuropharmacologic intervention as a diagostic tool. At present, the
veterinary practitioner can effectively aid many common behavioral pr
oblems, with the glaring exception of most aggressions, using extant d
rugs.
