Physiological and biochemical properties of a marine agarolytic association
of the bacterium Cytophaga diffluens and the infusorium Uronema marinum we
re investigated. The agarase activity of the association was shown to be hi
gher than that of the pure bacterial culture at all growth stages under ide
ntical conditions. Maximum agarase activity of the association, and of the
pure bacterial culture, was observed in a medium containing a small amount
of organic nitrogen (0.1% yeast extract).
