Abstract
A field theoretic study of the simultaneous electron - photon excitation (S EPE) and direct electron excitation (DEE) is done for He 1(1)S --> 2(3)S tr ansition by spin polarized electrons in a field of soft photons. The ratio of SEPE to DEE is found to lie around 3 x 10(-3) for 0.117 eV photons and i ncident electrons of energy E-i between 19.817 eV and 20 eV. The present re sult is compared with the existing experimental data.
