Abstract
Triphenylmethyl radicals (TPMR) with an o-positioned sulfonate group are ge nerated by alkaline hydrolysis of diphenyl sulfophthalide in DMSO. Electron ic and ESR spectra of these radicals are characterized. It is suggested tha t the radicals result from one-electron transfer reactions. Triarylmethyl r adicals are also formed in alkaline hydrolysis of polyarylenesulfophthalide s.
