This paper first studies the measure of redundancy in biorthogonal wavelet
systems and gives the explicit parameter representations of the general int
erpolating filters for lifting Donoho wavelets. Based on the measure and th
e parameter representations. a novel method is proposed to optimize co-redu
ndancy degree which is then used to construct a family of nearly semi-ortho
gonal interpolating wavelets. Furthermore, by performing the local orthogon
alization on the obtained wavelet functions we design a family of nearly or
thogonal interpolating wavelets. Finally, some examples are given which sho
w that our scheme is efficient in designing practical wavelet systems with
