Abstract
The dimers [eta(5)-RC5H4(CO)(2)Mo](2)(R = MeO2C, EtO2C) reacted with ( mu-EtS)(2)Fe-2(CO)(6) in boiling xylene to give trinuclear clusters (e ta(5)-RC5H4)(2)Mo2Fe(mu(3)-S)(CO)(7)(1a, R = MeO2C; 1b, R = EtO2C) and tetranuclear clusters(eta(5)-RC5H4)(4)Mo-4(mu(3)-S)(2)(CO)(4) (2a, R = MeO2C; 2b, R = EtO2C), whereas they reacted with (mu-PhS)(2)Fe-2(CO) (6) in boiling xylene to give 1a-b, 2a-b and dinuclear complexes [eta( 5)-RC5H4Mo(CO)(mu-SPh)](2) (3a, R = MeO2C; 3b, R = EtO2C). However, re actions of [eta(5)-RC5H4(CO)(2)Mo](2) (R = EtO2C) with (mu-EtS)(2) Fe- 2(CO)(6) and [(e)ta(5)-RC5H4(CO)(2)Mo](2)(R = H) with (mu-PhS)(2)Fe-2( CO)(6) in benzene under UV irradiation gave only the trinuclear cluste rs 1b and (eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Mo2Fe(mu(3)-S)(CO)(7)(1c), respectively. All new clusters 1b, 2a-b and 3a-b were fully characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods, as well as for 2a and 1c by X-ray diffraction analysis. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
