The concept of immune privilege is receiving renewed attention followi ng the identification of Fas ligand (FasL)-mediated apoptosis as a pro tective mechanism in this biological phenomenon. Once perceived as a p assive process relying on physical barriers and isolation, immune priv ilege can now be viewed as an active phenomenon employing an important natural process to maintain organ integrity.
