Abstract
Gabrielle Lord was born in Sydney in 1946 and educated at the Sacre Coeur C onvent, Rose Bay, and then the University of New England. She has worker in many jobs, as a teacher, fruit picker and for eight years as an employment officer with the Commonwealth Employment Service. Her first novel, Fortres s, was published in 1980; made into a movie in 1985. Since then she has wri tten seven more novels, most of them thrillers set in contemporary Australi a, dealing principally with the manifold abuses of children, and with the h arms that families can do. One--Salt (1990)--was a futuristic tale set in S ydney in 2075; her most recent novel, Feeding the Demons, was published ear lier this year. As yet there has been no detailed study of her work.
