Serotonin is implicated in pathophysiology of affective disorders. Only a f
ew and conflicting reports are available regarding the involvement of serot
onin in juvenile depression. Juvenile mania has not been studied. Therefore
, we investigated the role of central serotonin, using platelet serotonin u
ptake and basal level as its peripheral model, in juvenile mania. Platelet
serotonin uptake and basal level were compared in 15 manic and 10 normal ag
e matched control juveniles. Both mean platelet serotonin uptake and mean p
latelet serotonin basal level is significantly higher in manic state as com
pared to normal controls (p<0.05). Increased central serotonergic function
in juvenile mania is indicated by increased mean platelet serotonin uptake
and basal level found in this study.
