Abstract
To investigate the cellular origin and the mechanisms of multinucleated gia nt cell (MGC) formation in the CNS, various cytokines were applied to isola ted murine microglia. All the single cytokines failed to induce MGC. Howeve r, interleukin (IL)-13 and IL-4 induced microglial MGC formation in the pre sence of colony stimulating factors, which was inhibited by either anti-IL- 13 or anti-fms antibody. T helper 2 (Th2)-derived cytokines can induce MGC formation even in the absence of infectious agents. (C) 1999 Published by E lsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
