A study is presented of four-wave mixing (FWM) in L- and C-band EDFAs. From
experiments, it has been observed that FWM scales with the length of Er-do
ped fibre. II is shown theoretically that FWM crosstalk from EDFAs consider
ably exceeds that from NZDSF fibre in DWDM L-band systems and leads to a pe
nalty of up to 1 dB in terms of the Q parameter.
